AMERICAN GOV & ISSUES

MODULE 1: FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

The opening chapter of a story about the United States of America can be written from several angles.  In 1492, a continent that no one outside of it knew of its existence, a continent that is not mentioned of at all in the Bible (from which most Europeans derived basic knowledge on human origins and destiny) was finally ‘discovered’ by Christopher Columbus and turned the known world upside down. Nearly two centuries later, European settlers gained foothold on this continent and began building communities related to Europe but not of Europe. This monumental move is often symbolized by the successful landing of the Mayflower in 1620. A century after this and in 1776, an almost impossible task of building a new political and socioeconomic community commenced. Prior to this, powerful historical forces knitted the African, European, and the American continents together in a Trans-continental trade that sent millions of Africans as slaves across the Atlantic ocean to the Americas to become the human ‘machine’ of the agrarian economy. Into this cauldron of European settlers and African slaves were thrown Native Peoples who have occupied the American continent for centuries before these new arrivals. Perhaps one of the best observations made of this seemingly impossible experiment of building a NATION out of this motley crew was by Alexis De Tocqueville, a French historian, who toured the young United States in the 1840s and wrote a book called ‘Democracy in America.’ In it, De Tocqueville made the following observations:

“The men spread over this surface do not form, as in Europe, so many offshoots of a single family. Among them one sees, at first glance, three origins, and even the external form of their features have raised an almost insurmountable barrier between them. Chance has brought them together on the same ground, but it has mixed them up together without being able to merge them, and each one pursues his destiny separately.”

Below was my final Research paper i wrote at the end of the semester.

In this research the topic I chose to investigate was “ The Impact and Benefit

of Immigration to the US Economy”. The question I wanted to find out during this

research was Is immigration Helpful or Harmful to the US Economy.

In this research I gave room for different diversify answers as to the

importance of immigration . some think immigration is good for any country

especially the US because it boosts the workforce of the country, brings more

skills and ideas to solving most of our problems .in education , the health sector,

innovation and technology which in all generate more income for the country.

Whiles others are on the opinion that immigration takes away the jobs in the

country and makes it difficult for native Americans to find a decent job that pays a

good amount of money.

This and many other more is what one should expect after reading this article .

Enjoy!
